Garden Toilet Community Project Recognised

The Samoa Tourism Authority’s Garden Toilet Project was recognised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment during the recent National Environment Week, that concluded with the presentation of important national awards.

The Authority was rewarded for the initiative which provides locals and visitors with convenient garden restroom facilities at locations across the country. 

Currently there are 15 garden toilets around Samoa, with 10 in Upolu and 5 in Savaii and the Authority is planning to add more facilities on the Big Island.

The award also recognises the Authority’s ongoing efforts to encourage and promote good hygiene and sanitation in public places, a key focus of the Water and Sanitation Sector, which develops and implements projects aimed at improved health and sanitation to mitigate the risk of water borne diseases through the provision of clean water and public toilet facilities. 

The garden toilets, which are built to blend in with the natural environment and landscaped with gardens, are monitored and looked after in partnership with village communities where they’re built.

The award is a fitting recognition as Samoa commemorates National Sanitation Day on 19th November to coincide with World Toilet Day.

World Toilet Day was first observed in Samoa in 2011.
